EPA awards Westborough green energy company $130 million contract

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National Vehicle and Fuel Emissions Laboratory in Ann Arbor, Michigan tapped Westborough-based NORESCO to implement a new decarbonization program through an energy savings performance contract.

NORESCO is a subsidiary of the Florida-based, $20 billion Carrier Global Corporation. It helps clients adapt to and mitigate the impacts of climate change by decarbonizing, modernizing and electrifying aging infrastructure to be more sustainable and resilient, according to the company’s website.

The new program includes $130 million of energy efficiency improvements, critical infrastructure upgrades and comprehensive operations and maintenance services over a 22-year term, according to the Thursday press release.

The Ann Arbor laboratory is a state-of-the-art facility that provides engine emission testing services. The improvements are expected to cut the facility’s carbon dioxide emissions by 3,150 metric tons, the equivalent to the amount of carbon sequestered by 3,700 acres of forest land in one year.
