Enrollment, impacts of high-deductible health plans explored

Twenty-five percent of Americans with employer-sponsored health coverage are enrolled in high-deductible health plans, up from 4 percent a decade ago, according to a policy paper released on Thursday.

Health Affairs and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation reported in their paper that the annual deductible in such plans is $1,300 for an individual and $2,600 for a family.

In Affordable Care Act marketplaces, almost 90 percent of individual plan enrollees select such plans, which require higher amounts of out-of-pocket spending on health care before insurance coverage kicks in.

Early evidence shows such plans “have reduced spending and risks they pose for some consumers, who might avoid filling prescriptions and obtaining other necessary care because of costs.”
