EMC Corp. of Hopkinton is providing $70,000 in technology and services to help map the heavens.
The support will help the Pisgah Astronomical Research Institute in North Carolina collect celestial observation data and share it with astronomers, researchers and students. The institute said that without the project, astronomical photographic plates could be lost.
EMC donated hardware and software to support the project through its Information Heritage Initiative, created last year to help organizations collect information and make it available over the Internet for research and education projects.
