EMC, EPA Team Up On Distribution Efficiency

Data storage giant EMC Corp. of Hopkinton has joined a federal partnership intended to make company transportation and distribution practices more environmentally friendly.

The company joined the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership and aims to improve the environmental performance of its transport operations over the next three years.

The program's goal is to improve air quality and reduce fuel consumption. Under the program, EMC will adopt new technology for its distribution operations and bring the sources of its products closer to demand for those products.

Those efforts will make the company less dependent on trucking and will further its use of reusable and returnable packaging, according to the EPA.
