Hopkinton-based EMC Corp. has started construction on a data research center in Brazil, which will be its most significant R&D operation in Latin American to date, Gov. Deval Patrick’s office announced.
The groundbreaking in a Rio de Janeiro-based technology park coincided with Patrick’s nine-day trip to South America, which he took in an effort to forge stronger economic ties with the region.
The data storage and IT company, which is the second largest employer in Central Massachusetts, leads the global market in storage software revenues. EMC announced plans for the data center in June, saying it would focus on ways to “extract maximum value” from seismic data generated by the oil and gas industry. It plans to invest $100 million in Brazil over the next five years.
Today is the final day of Patrick’s trip, which included meetings in Chile and Brazil.
