EMC Acquires Fraud Detection, Security Vendor

EMC Corp. of Hopkinton has agreed to acquire Silver Tail Systems, a provider of web fraud detection and security software, for an undisclosed price, EMC announced today.

Silver Tail, based in Menlo Park, Calif., will become part of EMC's RSA security division. Its technology will enhance the division's position in a growing web-fraud detection market, EMC said in a statement. RSA's products help protect ecommerce, finance and government organizations.

The acquisition is expected to be completed before the end of the year. EMC said the deal is not expected to have a material impact on the company's earnings per share for 2012.

"We see tremendous opportunity with Silver Tail at the intersection of big data and security to leverage our collective expertise and technologies to move beyond the hype (and) to execute on the vision of intelligence-driven security that is risk-based, agile and contextual," said Art Coviello, executive vice president at EMC and executive chairman of the RSA group. "Together RSA and Silver Tail can deliver compelling solutions that leverage session intelligence and Big Data analytics to help our customers gain better visibility and control risk."

Silver Tail is EMC's fourth acquisition of 2012. Its most recent acquisition came in May, when it purchased Watch4Net Solutions of Montreal.
