Electric car-charging station opens at Framingham Pike plaza

Google The Framingham plaza off the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound now offers charging stations for electric cars.

A charging station for electric vehicles has opened at the Framingham service plaza off the Massachusetts Turnpike westbound.

The state Department of Transportation, which announced the opening Monday, is in the process of installing five other charging stations along the Pike, including the eastbound and westbound Charlton stations, which are expected to be activated before the end of the year.

The Framingham station is the Pike's fourth, joining Natick and the eastbound and westbound plazas in the town of Lee near the New York border.

The stations are all free to use.

The initiative is mean to enable long-distance electric-vehicle travel and support the use of electric cars across the state, according to the Department of Transportation. The Pike is one of several Massachusetts highways designated by the federal government as part of a network of electric-vehicle charging corridors, the state said.
