The Navy has awarded a $3 million contract to Groton-based General Dynamics Electric Boat to build electronic actuators that could be used to steer submarines and diving planes. The new devices would replace some hydraulics systems on planes. Part of the contract calls for designing an energy storage system that provides the same level of backup for electric actuators as stored oil pressure provides for hydraulic systems. Electric Boat is a wholly owned subsidiary of General Dynamics, based in Falls Church, Va.
