Municipal elections took place in 53 cities and towns around the state Tuesday, with Worcester and Leominster’s leadership remaining mostly unchanged while Fitchburg saw power handed over to a new mayor.
Fitchburg State Rep. Stephen DiNatale will take over power from Mayor Lisa Wong, who did not run for re-election after eight years in office. DiNatale, who has served in both municipal and state positions, beat out attorney Andrew Couture.
In Worcester, Mayor Joe Petty retained his seat against a run from City Councilor Michael Gaffney to see his third term in office. Krystian King was the only non-incumbent to receive one of the city’s six at-large city councilor positions.
In Leominster, Mayor Dean Mazzarella won his race and will become the longest serving mayor in the state when he enters his 13th tem in January. Mayor Mark Hawke retained his seat and will serve his fifth term in office beginning next year.
The newly-elected leaders will take office in January.
