Eight Central Massachusetts attorneys are among a list of 32 in the state that were either disbarred, criminally prosecuted or indefinitely suspended this year for stealing clients' money.
Two of the attorneys, Peter Langan Schofield of Grafton and Alan Mason of Princeton are currently serving jail time, according to the state Clients' Security Board.
Schofield was convicted of stealing $261,236 from two clients. Mason stole $222,204 from two clients, the board said. Schofield and Mason accounted for more than 22 percent of all the board's awards to wronged clients this year.
Other area attorneys to make the board's list include: Daniel R. Kirkpatrick of Barre who was disbarred. Two of his clients were awarded $157,300.
Leonard S. Lakin of Sudbury was also disbarred and one of his clients was awarded $138,781.
Arthur Khoury of Framingham and Theodore Scott Geller of Worcester were both disbarred and criminally prosecuted. Khoury stole $77,585 from one client while Geller stole $36,667 from 13 clients, the board said.
One client of Roberta Golden of Framingham was awarded $30,000. Her license to practice law was indefinitely suspended. She was criminally prosecuted but found not guilty of larceny.
Robert N. Wilson of Ayer was disbarred. One of his clients was awarded $700.
The board, which was established by the state Supreme Court in 1974 to rectify wrongful conduct by lawyers, said the most money, $1.8 million, was awarded this year to clients in trusts and estates matters.
