Edward Street Child Services, an early childhood investment and advocacy group which dates back to 1883, has simplified and changed its name to Edward Street, the nonprofit announced on Dec. 1.
At the same time, the group also released a new logo and redesigned its website.
The new name is intended to reflect the group’s mission of broad investment in early childhood. Originally, Edward Street was known as The Day Nursery, operating as a childcare center. Then, the nonprofit was called Edward Street Child Services, while it worked to support childcare providers.
Today, its mission has widened, and includes promoting early childhood success through partnerships, advocacy and training, according to the nonprofit.
Established in 1883, Edward Street was originally a collaborative initiative led by area faith-based organizations who aimed to respond to a community need for childcare, according to organizational history detailed on the organization’s website. As time wore on, the group moved to 10 Edward St. to care for children whose mothers were patients at Memorial Hospital. Over a century later, the board of directors voted to close the center and focus on providing programming for children.
