Education, Health Up; Financial Activities Down

The Worcester area saw the most growth in the education and health services sector over the past year, while financial activities shrank the most, according to the latest data from the FDIC.

For the first quarter of the year, employment in the education and health services sector grew by 3.7 percent over the same period last year. Financial activities employment went down 2.9 percent. Other growth industries were information, at 2.6 percent, and government, wholesale trade and transportation, warehousing and utilities, which grew 1.3 percent each. Professional and business services shrank 1.8 percent, and manufacturing went down 1.3 percent.

The numbers reflect data for the Worcester “New England City and Town Area,” a federally-defined division that includes much of Central Massachusetts and extends into northern Connecticut.
