Education, health, manufacturing and science jobs keep Mass. unemployment at 3.0%
Private businesses in Massachusetts added 5,400 jobs in March as gains occurred in nearly every industry categorized by the state Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development.
The monthly jobs report said the state’s unemployment rate remained at 3.0% from February. The unemployment rate in February 2018 was 3.5%.
Job gains occurred in education and health services; manufacturing; professional, scientific and business services; construction; financial activities; trade, transportation and utilities; and information.
Education and health services; manufacturing; and professional, business and scientific jobs accounted for nearly all of the jobs added with 5,400.
“Those job gains, along with the labor force gains and a consistently low unemployment rate, are signals of the continued strength of the commonwealth's job market," Labor and Workforce Development Secretary Rosalin Acosta said, pointing to those three key industries.
According to Acosta’s office, the state’s labor force increased slightly, as 1,700 more residents were employed and 1,600 fewer residents were unemployed over the month.
The only private-sector industry losing jobs over the month was leisure and hospitality, which saw a 2,400-job decline over the month. Over the year, those jobs are down 2,300.
Public sector jobs were down over the month, with 1,300 fewer people employed in government jobs than in February. Over the year, however, the government sector has reported a 4,500-job gain.
