Worcester science museum the EcoTarium received $1.1 million in funding from the federal Shuttered Venue Operators Grant program, the nonprofit announced Thursday.
The EcoTarium is a nonprofit and partially depends on admissions fees for operating expenses, said the announcement. It has been gradually reopening with partial capacity since April, after closing its doors and decreasing staff last spring in light of the coronavirus pandemic. On July 9, it opened its indoor spaces, which was the last phase of the reopening.
During nearly a year with closed doors, the museum offered online education programs and community outreach.
In addition to reopening in phases, the EcoTarium in May had its president & CEO, Lucy Hale, resign from her position; and in July, the museum's employees voted to unionize. The museum's board is conducting a national search for Hale's replacement.
Established as part of the federal Economic Aid to Hard-Hit Small Businesses, Nonprofits, and Venues Act, the grant program includes more than $16 billion, distributed by the U.S. Small Business Association.
