EcoTarium Reaches For 100% Efficiency

Worcester science and nature museum the EcoTarium has received a $51,917 state grant it says could make the facility nearly 100 percent energy efficient.

The grant, which is from the Massachusetts Cultural Council's Cultural Facilities Fund, will be used to make improvements to the museum's power plant. With the plant, the EcoTarium provides its own its own electricity. The current plant is 87 percent energy efficient, the museum said.

The grant will fund the installation of new controls and metering equipment that the museum expects will improve the plant's efficiency by between 5 and 10 percent.

The co-generation plant was originally built as a museum exhibit and has been powering the 60,000-square-foot building ever since.
