Economic Indicators: Steve Buchalter, Enterprise Cleaning

Who are your customers?

Our customers are basically any businesses located in Central Massachusetts out towards Boston and Rhode Island. Our customers have facilities that range in size from 500 square feet to 1 million square feet. Industries range from banks, to manufacturers, car dealerships, restaurants, schools and everything in between. We clean 160 buildings and have 110 employees.

How do you expect to close out 2010 in terms of revenues?

We expect to do $3 million in revenue this year. That’s up significantly from last year, but it certainly isn’t our highest. We’re still off from our peak, which was probably three years ago. But the good news is that we’re up about 25 percent from 2009.

What are your projections for 2011?

We’re expecting probably another 25 to 35 percent increase in sales.

Are you planning to do anything different in 2011 to help drive revenues?

Instead of just being a cleaning company, we’re trying to offer more to make it easier for our customers. We’ve begun working with other vendors to provide our customers with carpet replacement, floor tile replacement and painting services. Now we’re also offering landscaping, rubbish removal, pest control and snow plowing. We’re going to evaluate this approach and hope to add to it. Eventually our goal is to the buy the smaller companies that we’re working with on providing these additional services.

How did the recession impact your business?

We lost 40 accounts during the recent recession. The industries impacted were all over the map. The banking sector is one area where we grew during the recession, but pretty much every type of industry across the board was hit.

How are you feeling about 2011?

Very optimistic. If you asked me that question in 2009, scared would have been my response. I’m feeling a lot better. We’re not out of this recession by any means, but I’m very optimistic about 2011.
