Where is the economy in Central Massachusetts headed in 2012? We're finishing a year that was a bit of a roller-coaster ride, with some good momentum near the end of the year. For example, the state's unemployment rate was falling gradually, but housing prices were flat to slightly lower.
So it's probably no surprise that those who took part in our annual Economic Outlook Survey for this special year-end Economic Forecast issue have about as lukewarm an outlook for the New Year as those who took our survey for 2011. There's more optimism, for sure, but it's nowhere near a level in which everyone is about to break into a chorus of "Happy Days Are Here Again." (And remember: That song was popular as the United States was in the depths of the Great Depression.)
Backing up our survey in this issue is a list of our editorial staff's 10 predictions for 2012, along with a look back at how we did on our prognostications for 2011.
We also take a look at "5 Things to Watch" in each of the six major sectors of the Central Massachusetts economy: Manufacturing & Technology, Energy, Real Estate, Health Care, Education and Banking & Finance. And we have outlooks from several CEOs in the region.
Take a digital, page-by-page look at our Economic Forecast issue for 2012, and see if your expectations for the year ahead are similar or different. And please send us your feedback with an online comment, or by emailing us at editorial@wbjournal.com.
