Westborough-based electronic medical records firm eClinicalWorks announced the launch a network that helps health care providers communicate with each other regarding patient care in a secure manner.
The company said 10,000 physicians are already part of the network, called Join the Network, and that it's investing an additional $10 million in it over the next year to enhance the network and make sure providers can connect with each other no matter whether they use paper or electronic health records systems.
According to eClinicalWorks, the network came because medical practices, even those using electronic records, don't have systems that can communicate with one another, so doctors still rely on fax machines to transfer patient records and coordinate care.
"We are making this investment because we believe that optimal physician collaboration is central to improving the overall quality of patient care," said Girish Kumar Navani, CEO and co-founder of eClinicalWorks. "We feel that an open, secure network will help move the industry forward. And, over time we will enhance the network so medical professionals in a range of ambulatory care settings can participate."
Members who join the network can find and connect with providers; send electronic referrals to providers, along with insurance information; transmit patient records; and automatically receive recommended providers within 10 miles.
The open network can be accessed at www.jointhenetwork.com or www.p2popen.com.
