ECI Biotech Inc. of Worcester has been awarded a $949,000 grant from the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases.
The institute is part of the National Institute of Health and the Phase II grant is intended to help ECI commercialize a product that quickly detects the presence of harmful bacteria in chronic wounds. The product, which ECI calls ExpressDetect, will help doctors assess wound infections in time to prescribe topical antibiotics or apply a dressing. Chronic wounds often do not heal because of infection.
ECI said the visual signs of infection are not reliable and cultures, swabs and biopsies can take two or three days to produce results. The company said ExpressDetect can provide a definitive diagnosis in minutes.
ECI CEO Anthony J. Bernardo said 14 million chronic wounds are treated every year, and each wound is assessed up to 10 times during the course of healing, representing "a huge global market opportunity for ECI."
