Early May sees a decrease in new coronavirus cases

Coronavirus cases in Massachusetts have seen a large decrease in daily reported coronavirus cases, according to Massachusetts Department of Public Health data. 

Massachusetts saw an abrupt daily change in cases with a small 1% increase Monday, and a 2% increase Tuesday. Cases statewide now stand at 70,271. As of Tuesday, Worcester County also saw a shift in cases with a 2% increase of 126 new cases bringing the total to 6,597. 

Statewide, cases stood at a seven-day rolling average of 2,016 on April 30, and have now decreased to 1,710. Worcester County has gone from an average of 250 down to 228 since the end of April. 

The death toll in Worcester County increased by 11 on Tuesday, with a total tally of 331. Statewide, coronavirus deaths rose Tuesday by 122, with 4,212 overall. This is an increase for daily deaths in Massachusetts after a few days of much lower counts: 83 on Saturday and 75 on Sunday.

The Department of Public Health reported 9,081 new administered coronavirus tests with 333,349 total.

The city of Worcester has also seen a relative decrease in cases, with 42 new cases Tuesday, or a 2% increase, bringing the total to 2,504.

UMass Memorial Health Care and Saint Vincent Hospital in Worcester have a total of 266 coronavirus patients with 109 in intensive care. There are now 137 coronavirus deaths in the hospital systems to date, and 14 new employees have tested positive, contributing to a total of 206.

MetroWest Medical Center in Framingham and Natick report 55 suspected and confirmed cases, and Milford Regional Medical Center reports 44, according to the Department of Public Health. 

Other Central Massachusetts hospitals such as Harrington Hospital in Southbridge, Heywood Hospital in Gardner, and HealthAlliance in Leominster report a total 44 suspected or confirmed cases.

Throughout the nation, there are now 1.2 million coronavirus cases, and almost 71,000 deaths, according to Johns Hopkins University in Maryland. Worldwide cases have almost surpassed 3.7 million with more than 256,000 deaths.
