Assumption program adds online option
The nationally ranked rehabilitation counseling graduate program at Assumption College will now be available to students online, school officials said.
The online master's degree program is Council on Rehabilitation Education (CORE) accredited, and will be a full 50 credit, 16 course, eight semester program.
The school offers graduate degrees in six other disciplines, but only the rehabilitation counseling program will be available online, said Adrian Dumas, director of graduate enrollment management and services at Assumption.
The course always had an online element, in addition to traditional in-class work, so moving it entirely online was a natural fit, Dumas said.
Assumption is one of only 10 schools in the country offering rehabilitation continuing education programs, and as such, receives a fair amount of interest in the program from out-of-state applicants, said Dumas. Offering the course completely online will better serve those potential students.
The convenience of the online format is also a natural fit for those working the long, and sometimes odd, hours of a rehabilitation counselor.
"The biggest thing with the online course is really the time convenience," Dumas said. "Someone working the second or third shift, which is going to happen in the social services, it gives them the opportunity to get a master's without having to free up Monday through Thursday nights."
Assumption has no plans to offer any of its other graduate programs online, at least not yet. However, Dumas did note that virtually every course at the school uses online media for communication and research.
