Drug study shows Genzyme's treatment to be effective

Genzyme Corp., which has operations in Westboro, revealed today that a research study published in the Journal of Bone and Mineral Research demonstrates the effectiveness of its Cerezyme treatment for patients suffering from Gaucher disease.

The study showed that Cerezyme helped improve bone mineral density in patients with Type 1 Gaucher disease in a dose-dependent manner.  Gaucher disease patients are at risk for developing bone complications, such as osteoporosis and fractures.

The investigators of the study conducted a retrospective analysis of more than 500 patients participating in the Int'l Collaborative Gaucher Group Gaucher Registry.  The study compared the outcomes of 342 patients with Type 1 Gaucher disease who received treatment with Cerezyme to 160 patients who did not receive treatment.  Patients receiving the treatment showed a significant increase in bone density versus those who did not receive treatment.

Genzyme develops new technologies in the life sciences sector.
