The state’s Department of Public Utilities has approved NStar‘s proposal for a $16 million smart grid system that will cover 2,800 residential customers in Hopkinton, Newton and Jamaica Plain.
The program will allow the utility company and its customers to better monitor energy usage to promote conservation.
Each of the state’s four utility companies are required to develop smart grid proposals that aim to decrease energy usage during peak hours.
The NStar approval is DPU’s first ruling on the four proposals. The DPU expects to rule on the other proposals in the coming weeks, including one by National Grid that would impact Worcester.
