The Massachusetts film tax credit program cost the state about $82.4 million in 2009 and generated about $103.8 million for Massachusetts residents and businesses, according to a report released this week by the Department of Revenue.
Eligible productions can receive tax credits worth a quarter of their production and payroll costs.
The DOR found that movie productions filmed in the state totaled $329.7 million for the year, and it attributed the vast majority, $319 million, to the tax incentives. Feature films accounted for almost 93 percent of the total credits claimed, and $82 million of the total spending went to movie stars who made more than $1 million.
Of the $319 million in spending attributable to the tax credits, 33 percent went to Massachusetts residents or businesses in the state.
