Thieves broke into U.S. Sen. Christopher Dodd's Hartford office late Saturday, taking undisclosed items and leaving evidence at the scene, city police said.
Police on Sunday declined to say what was stolen or what evidence was left behind.
"We have some ... properties that were left on the scene that we want to process immediately," Sgt. Reggie Allen told WFSB-TV.
Jamie Radice, a spokeswoman for Dodd, confirmed the break-in but was not sure what was taken from the office on Lewis Street. She declined further comment.
Police believe the suspects jumped from the roof of an adjacent building onto the fire escape of the building housing Dodd's office and broke into through a second floor window between 10 p.m. and 11 p.m. Saturday.
Dodd, who has served in Congress for more than 30 years, is seeking the Democratic nomination for president in the 2008 election.
