The state’s Department of Corrections will temporarily suspend operations at MCI-Shirley and South Middlesex Correctional Center in Framingham within the next 60 days, impacting nearly 200 inmates between the two campuses.
The suspension will affect housing units that hold minimum-security and pre-release inmates, according to the DOC. Some inmates will be moved to home confinement, and others may be transferred to different minimum-security facilities.
The operation suspension comes as the department reports the lowest inmate population in 35 years. South Middlesex Correctional Center currently holds 26 inmates, just 14% of the facility’s operational capacity. MCI-Shirley’s minimum-security housing units currently hold 166 inmates, just 44% of its operational capacity.
Changes at the facility will not affect quarantine and medical isolation space availability, the DOC said, noting that it has performed 23,600 tests for a current population of fewer than 6,600 inmates.
