The owner of an independent baked goods distributor that recently relocated to the former Nissen Baking Co. plant Worcester said he sees potential to expand operations at the new headquarters.
Duva Distributors opened doors in August after an extensive renovation of the 18,600-square-foot facility at 983 Millbury St., said Chris Duva, president and CEO of the 13-year-old company, on Tuesday.
Duva said the building had been vacant for about three years when he decided to buy it.
The company had outgrown its former space in Shrewsbury and needed better highway access when the Millbury Street property was for sale, with all the needed components for packaging and distribution, Duva said. It’s located just off Route 146, next to the campus of the College of the Holy Cross, and between I-290 and the Mass Pike.
Duva Distributors ships prepackaged baked goods on 17 routes, with 25 percent of its customer base made up of retailers, while the rest are wholesale customers. Duva said his two largest customers are Fantini Baking Co. and Joseph’s Bakery.
With 34 employees, Duva said there is also room to grow in Worcester, which was not an option at the former property in Shrewsbury.
“The best part of the new location is the ability to get to Rhode Island, Springfield and Hartford,” Duva said in an interview Tuesday.
