Direct Air, the lone airline carrier at Worcester Regional Airport, will reduce service to Florida beginning next month, according to company president Ed Warneck.
South Carolina-based Direct Air began nonstop flights from Worcester to West Palm Beach, Fla., in November with the hopes of offering year-round service, Warneck said. But, due to diminished demand in the warmer-weather months, the company decided to make the Worcester to Palm Beach route seasonal.
"We just weren't getting the sales that we needed," Warneck said.
The only year-round flights currently offered from the airport are to two Florida locales: Ft. Meyers/Punta Gorda and Sanford/Orlando.
The West Palm Beach route did have a "good" winter and Warneck said he expects to resume flights to there in November. That's also when Direct Air will begin flights servicing Nassau, Bahamas and San Juan, Puerto Rico, from Worcester.
Warneck is hoping to run the flights to San Juan year round while Nassau will be seasonal.
Direct Air flies from Worcester to Myrtle Beach seasonally as well, from mid-February through November.
Warneck said passengers who had flights booked to West Palm Beach after May can have their tickets refunded or transferred to other Direct Air flights.
Richard Walsh, a spokesperson for the Massachusetts Port Authority, which last year assumed control of Worcester Airport, said it's not unusual for airlines to adjust schedules based on demand. Airlines, he said, are not required to inform MassPort of schedule changes.
