Caring employees give DCU an edge
With $3.3 billion in assets, DCU (Digital Federal Credit Union) not only ranks as the 17th largest credit union in the U.S. and the largest in New England, but it has also been the fastest growing large credit union in the country over the past decade.
The main reason for this rapid growth is high member satisfaction, driven by DCU’s well-trained helpful staff. "One thing that truly sets us apart is our people," according to Tim Garner, vice president marketing/strategic planning. "They genuinely care about the person across the counter or on the other end of the line. They are great at helping our members improve the quality of their financial lives."
DCU’s annual fall member survey has shown 95 to 97% of DCU’s members have been satisfied or very satisfied every year for the last nine years. Every year, about one third of the members report that their satisfaction has increased.
DCU knows that happy, satisfied employees are a key to happy, satisfied members. In June, DCU was recognized as one of the 25 Best Medium-Sized Companies to Work For in America by the Great Places to Work Institute for the third year running.
DCU’s first branch in Worcester opened in May on Gold Star Boulevard and another is opening on Shrewsbury Street shortly. DCU already had more members in the city than any other community it served when it purchased the naming rights to the DCU Center from the city in October 2004. That move helped raise DCU’s profile in central Massachusetts. Also among DCU’s 16 locations are Leominster and Westborough in Worcester County.
Membership in DCU is open to anyone who lives, works or attends school in Worcester and Lowell, Mass. In other communities, membership is available to everyone through organization membership, employment in one of more than 650 companies, or by family relationship. There are no membership fees. DCU now has more than 280,000 members.
DCU provides a full range of financial services for its members, including: checking and savings products, consumer loans, mortgages, home equity loans, and credit cards. For businesses, DCU provides checking and savings products, business loans, and SBA-backed loans. DCU’s subsidiaries, DCU Financial and DCU Insurance, meet member needs for financial planning advice, investments, and insurance. Members who direct deposit into their checking accounts become eligible for additional benefits, such as ATM surcharge reimbursement and payroll access up to two days before payday.
Throughout its history, DCU has been in the forefront of financial institution services. In 1995, DCU became the third credit union in the U.S. with a website, and a year later it introduced online banking. In 1997, the credit union introduced a web-based alternative to traditional branch banking. By 2002, 54% of its members were active users of online banking services, among the highest percentage for any traditional financial institution.
DCU also gives back to the communities that it serves, focusing its giving on the needs of children. For example, its DCU for Kids charitable foundation just raised over $270,000 for the Boomer Esaison Foundation for Cystic Fibrosis. DCU provides annual support for 52 classrooms through Adopt-A-Classroom including six in Worcester alone.
