Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health, which operates centers in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, has taken over the former Durham School in Fitchburg to serve as a day school for students with autism and other disabilities.
The special focus for the school remains the same, but with a new name: the CARES School, using an acronym for the Center for Autism Resources and Education Services.
Devereux took over the Durham School in September and has 13 students enrolled. Devereux, which announced the acquisition this week, said it has been pleased with the smooth transition. It did not disclose financials of the deal.
Katherine Flynn, former lead teacher of the Devereux school in Rutland, was promoted to serve as principal of the CARES School, and Lisa Lajoie will take on the role of lead teacher and curriculum specialist for the school.
The school, which is accredited with the state, serves students age 9 to 21.
Devereux’s Massachusetts and Rhode Island agency is an affiliate of Devereux Advanced Behavioral Health of Pennsylvania.
