The 35-acre area within the 4,400-acre community will include various types of housing in a walkable neighborhood through the project, including single-family homes, duplexes, townhomes and multi-family buildings, MassDevelopment said.
The decision by the agency to negotiate with Evergreen comes after MassDevelopment sought proposals in April for for a developer to build up to 120 housing units in the area. Six developers responded. MassDevelopment said it will sell the property to Evergreen, which plans to build about 40 large and small single-family homes, 40 duplexes and townhomes and 40 rental units. Twenty-seven of those units will be available to low-to-moderate income households.
“Demand for nearby housing is likely to grow with 3,600 employees already working at Devens businesses, and these (types of housing units) will appeal to many workers,” said MassDevelopment President and CEO Marty Jones.
According to MassDevelopment, which manages the former U.S. Army base, Devens bylaws allow for up to 282 residential units; 140 have already been renovated or built.
