Developer announces $25-million Northborough baseball complex

Developers announced the soft opening of a $25-million baseball complex at the junction of Route 20 and Route 9 in Northborough this summer, which will be home to the New England Ruffnecks Baseball program.
The 30-acre complex will include three baseball diamonds, a workout facility, and retail tenants, and is the first of its scale in New England, according to the developer, New England Baseball Enterprises.
Known as the New England Baseball Complex, it will give the Boston-based Ruffnecks a home field. The program, which includes teams for players aged 13 to 18, now uses various Boston-area baseball fields for home games, according to Jason Kosow, chief financial officer at New England Baseball Enterprises.
“We’d like to have a very synergistic complex in terms of baseball, training and potentially good retail opportunities out front,” Kosow said. “I think (different tenants) will support each other, in terms of branding.”
New England Baseball Enterprises said it’s reviewing proposals from potential retail tenants, which may occupy up to three parcels on site. Sports medicine and health care providers and a sport-themed restaurant are two examples of interested tenants.
The project has been years in the making. New England Baseball Enterprises said the Ruffnecks has been seeking to build a complex since 2006. The Northborough location was chosen due to its central location and proximity to major highways, Kosow said.
The complex is expected to be in full swing in time for the 2014-2015 season, which begins Sept. 1. Local tournaments will be played in Northborough, but teams from all over the United States will likely travel to town to play as well, Kosow said. Developers expect the complex to garner 200,000 annual visitors for sports-related activities alone.
