DEP cites Mass. businesses for improper disposal

The Massachusetts Dept. of Environmental Protection has taken enforcement action against several local companies for waste ban violations, finding “large volumes” of recyclable material through waste facility inspections.

In an effort to crack down on continued disposal of cardboard and other materials that could be recycled, MassDEP sent inspectors to a number of solid waste facilities during the fall to monitor compliance with new state regulations that prohibit throwing away those materials.

MassDEP cited 12 companies for illegal cardboard disposal across the Commonwealth, and the nine facilities that generated the materials.  Ethan Allen Furniture of Bellingham, Lindenmeyr Munroe of Franklin, and Wright Line of Worcester were each notified for throwing away recyclable materials, and are required to draft a plan to stop the disposal of banned materials for submission to the MassDEP for approval.

The MassDEP is responsible for ensuring clean air and water, safe management and recycling of solid and hazardous wastes, timely cleanup of hazardous waste sites and spills, and the preservation of wetlands and coastal resources.
