The Deane Brothers worked with the Federal Communications Commission and local investors to open the FM broadcast station WJDF out of a building in downtown Orange in 1995. Beyond their desire to operate a radio station, the trio recognized the fact the North Quabbin region long struggled with economic challenges and wanted to make the area seem less invisible to the rest of the state. The radio station was a way to make the region’s voice louder and to promote local businesses through radio advertising.
In order to stay ahead of the industry curve for the last 21 years, the station has gone beyond local on-air broadcasts to offer live streaming and video for specific programming. The brothers partner with the local cable-access television station to simulcast local sporting events and festivals. To give back to the community, WJDF – a call sign made out of the brother’s initials – promotes nonprofit events and fundraisers on their airwaves. The company is an active member of the North Quabbin Chamber of Commerce, where Jay Deane served as board president for five years. The station hosts a 12-hour Food-A-Thon to raise money for six local food pantries.
