Dean College, a private college located in Franklin, is using a $600,000 grant from the Massachusetts Life Sciences Center in Waltham to fund new scientific equipment for the college’s life science and health programs.
New equipment purchased with the grant will include spectrophotometers, liquid chromatograph and tissue culture equipment, and virtual reality software. The grant will allow the college to upgrade existing equipment utilized by students.
These upgrades will help Dean to support increasing demand for lab technicians and research assistants, according to a press release from the college on Wednesday, allowing the school to provide more opportunities in these fields for low-income and underrepresented students.
"This is an exciting time for the sciences at Dean," Scott Sibley, vice president of academic affairs, said in the press release. "This grant and the new equipment will provide Dean students with important skills that will enhance their laboratory experiences and allow for signature work."
In addition to supporting existing programs, the school said this equipment will be used in educational tracks newly introduced to Dean’s curriculum, including pre-physical assistant, pre-physical therapy, and pre-athletic training programs.
Massachusetts Life Science Center is a quasi-public agency supporting economic development in the life science sector. MLSC was founded in 2007 and has invested more than $700 million in grants, loans, capital infrastructure investments, tax incentives, and workplace programs, according to its website.
Founded in 1865, Dean College sits on a 100-acre campus in Franklin. It enrolled 1,200 full time students in the fall semester and has a $64-million endowment, according to the WBJ Research Department.
