Dean College in Franklin is joining an increasing number of colleges in Central Massachusetts and elsewhere planning to hold classes on campus this fall despite risks from the coronavirus pandemic.

Dean will hold classes on campus starting Sept. 1 but will move classes online following Thanksgiving break. Finals for the fall semester will be held online.

The college is one of a few in Central Massachusetts planning to finish the fall semester online, as public health officials have predicted a spike in cases this winter. Clark University and College of the Holy Cross in Worcester and Nichols College in Dudley are among those with the same plans.

Students at Dean can expect a mix of classes held in-person, online and in a hybrid format, the college said. That will be the case in particular for returning students, but incoming freshmen are expected to have classes primarily in person. Classes may also be held as late at 6 p.m., or on Saturdays, because of a reduction in class sizes for proper distancing. Students and faculty will be required to wear face coverings.

Dean said it will share more information on scheduling changes by Aug. 1. The college said it is still working out dining hall arrangements and whether to hold fall sports.

For dormitory restrictions, Dean said it would mandate testing upon students' arrival for the semester and require face coverings at all times when students aren't in their rooms. No guests will be allowed except for fellow Dean students.

Among others, Worcester State University, Framingham State University and Fitchburg State University have said they plan to hold classes on campus through the fall semester with adequate spacing in classrooms and dorms. Quinsigamond Community College in Worcester has said it will hold classes only online with few exceptions, including laboratories.
