The DCU Center, owned by the City of Worcester and managed by ASM Global, will replace all of its arena seating over a five-month period centered around this summer.
The City selected Maine-based Hussey Seating Co. to replace 12,000 seats throughout the area. An additional 3,000 floor chars will be bid out in the future, according to a Wednesday press release from the DCU Center management.
The new, padded seats in the lower 100-level will be blue in honor of the Worcester Railers hockey team’s colors. The upper level seating will be black.
Movie and television productions have encouraged the darker colors as a preferred backdrop to their productions. This change is likely to increase the number of production companies considering the venue in the future, according to the DCU press release.
The project will cost approximately $7 million. City taxpayers will not be paying for the project as all capital improvements to the facility are funded by a special taxing district around the arena, which gets money through net new state hotel, meals, and sales tax revenues from certain establishments in the city, according to the press release.
In addition to seating, the DCU Center will be adding enhanced rigging, a new sound system, new convention center ballroom chairs, and enhanced cellular service within the facility. Some of these projects will take place during the summer and others during the upcoming season.
“Over the last 40 years, countless memories have been made at the DCU Center, and we take great pride that the City continues to invest in the facility and that we are continually improving the overall experience for the fans,” DCU Center General Manager Sandy Dunn said in the press release. “These improvements are a direct result of our ongoing fan surveys and feedback from our clients and partners.”
ASM Global has offices around the world. Its North American headquarters is in Los Angeles.
