Almost 20 years ago there was a dearth of economic data for the MetroWest region, leading Framingham State College to create the MetroWest Economic Resource Center.
On Friday, May 8 from 8 to 10:30 a.m. the college will host the 17th Annual MERC Conference, where it will share a wide variety of local economic data. The audience is usually made up of local business people, bankers, business groups and town officials. It will be held at the D. Justin McCarthy Center at the college.
This year's conference is titled, "Surviving Recession," and will cover the combined MetroWest and Greater Marlborough economies.
"This year the focus will be on unemployment because it has been such a major issue in the economy," said Martha Meaney, a professor in the college's Department of Economics and Business Administration and one of the conference presenters.
The data is pulled from many sources, including statistics from the U.S. Census Bureau, Federal Reserve of Boston and the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics as well as the state's Departments of Education, Revenue and Unemployment Assistance. The center also conducts a number of surveys throughout the year.
The data, which it also gives out in a handout, includes the latest information about unemployment rates, employment, wages, housing prices, tax levies, cost of living, job churning, permits, state aid, and K-12 enrollment figures.
The cost to attend is $25 and includes the conference handbook. Registration is available by calling the MetroWest Chamber of Commerce at 508-879-5600 or by going online at www.metrowest.org. Registration is also available at the Marlborough Regional Chamber of Commerce by phone at 508-485-7746, or online at http://www.marlboroughchamber.org/registerfrm.php.
