The town of Leominster’s mayor’s office and health department have awarded a certificate of environmental achievement to the Cutting Edge Stone Works for its efforts to reduce its water use and lessen the environmental impact on its property.
Cutting Edge makes custom stone countertops, and produces a large amount of “gray water,” the water used to cool the stone-cutting saws. The company had a 1,500-gallon holding tank installed under the floor of its facility. All of the company’s cutting and polishing stations drain to the tank, and some of the water is circulated back to stone slab cutting tables. When it’s needed for certain jobs, the water can be filtered before being reused.
The holding tank only has to be emptied once per year, according to the company, and the stone dust left behind is safe to be discarded in the company’s dumpster.
