Cumberland Farms joins healthy food challenge

Wikipedia

Cumberland Farms will promote healthy foods in its stores as part of a new partnership with a nonprofit focused on healthier eating.

The Westborough-based convenience store chain will redesign the layouts of its stores, add new products and introduce new signage to promote selection of healthier foods in its 600 retail locations across the country, according to a Thursday press release.

According to the release, 70 percent of Cumberland Farms stores in the eight states where it operates are located in food deserts, or communities underserved by traditional grocery sources.

Through the agreement with the nonprofit Partnership for a Healthier America, Cumberland Farms will provide discounts and coupons to its employees to encourage them to incorporate healthier foods into their diets; price healthier foods more competitively and continue to participate in SNAP; and promote healthier foods by leveraging its private label products.

The Partnership for a Healthier America is supported by honorary chair Michelle Obama.
