Employees at marijuana company Cultivate’s cultivation facility in Leicester have voted to join the United Food & Commercial Workers Union, according to a Tuesday announcement. They will officially become part of the Massachusetts Cannabis Union, Local 1445.
Dozens of employees work in the facility, which supplies dispensaries in Greater Boston, according to the announcement.
Efforts to unionize cannabis employees are slowly picking up steam in Massachusetts. Last month, Mayflower Medicinals cultivation employees in Holliston successfully voted to join the UFCW, one of the first cohorts of local cannabis employees to do so.
“I’m very happy about this union because it feels good to believe in this job as a long-term career, especially now that the industry has been classified as essential. I want to grow in my job while we grow in the field," said Cultivate employee Amy Hopkinson, in a statement.
UFCW says it represents cannabis industry employees across the industry.
