Cultivate to negotiate with Framingham for retail pot shop

Leicester-based cannabis firm Cultivate, one of the first two shops to launch sales on the East Coast, has begun negotiations with Framingham for a host community agreement.

The company hopes to open a shop at 250 Worcester Road in a former restaurant on Route 9.

If negotiations are successful, the company would reach the statutory limit of retail stores. The Leicester location opened in November and the company is also negotiating a host community agreement in Worcester.

Cultivate is also planning to sell medical cannabis to registered medical marijuana cardholders.

“We are excited to be moving forward with the City of Framingham to finalize a community host agreement for a recreational dispensary,” the company said via a spokesperson.

The city announced Tuesday that Cultivate and retailer Innovative Flower LLC would begin negotiations on agreements for retail stores. Innovative Flower has proposed a shop at 655 Cochituate Road.

The news comes as Cultivate hopes to significantly expand its cultivation operations in addition to its 10,000-square-foot grow site in Leicester. The company has indicated to officials in both Leicester and Uxbridge that it wants another host community agreement to build a 100,000-square-foot cultivation and manufacturing facility.

Per Massachusetts cannabis regulations, a licensed marijuana company can operate up to only 100,000 square feet of cultivation space, so the company can only build in one of those two towns.

Other entities that will begin negotiations with Framingham are product manufacturer Cloud Creamery and cultivation and manufacturer The Caregiver-Patient Connection LLC.

The city has previously announced that other retail license hopefuls Union Twist and Worcester-based Temescal Wellness have begun negotiations with the city. Per Framingham’s bylaws, the city can allow just two more entities to begin the process of opening retail stores.

Since November, the city has received 17 applications from 16 entities for dispensaries.
