Connecticut-based Athena Health Care Systems is making its first foray into Central Massachusetts, acquiring Southborough-based Radius HealthCare Centers, which includes nursing homes in Worcester and Southbridge.
By purchasing six Radius sites – five nursing homes and one assisted-living facility – Athena has established a presence spanning the Bay State with 11 facilities. It’s also taking over management of another location in Braintree, on the South Shore.
According to the state Registry of Deeds, the Southbridge and Worcester transactions were executed Sept. 28. The Radius center at Southbridge, a 48,602-square-foot facility at 84 Chapin St., was sold for nearly $13.6 million. Meanwhile, the 63,810-square-foot center at 119 Providence St. in Worcester carried a price tag of $9.6 million.
Under Radius, the Southbridge and Worcester sites, each with 144 beds, offer care for short-term patients as well as long-term residents and specialized in intravenous therapy, tube feedings and pain management, according to the Radius website. The Worcester site also offers a sub-acute short-stay program with daily rehabilitation services, a physical therapy gym and full case management. Dolores Shermer, vice president of operations for Athena, said no changes will be made to the care offered at any of the facilities.
“We look forward to expanding and providing quality services to the former Radius HealthCare Centers,” Athena President and CEO Lawrence Santilli said in a statement. “Athena will continue to strive and meet the needs of our residents to enhance the quality of life.”
In addition to the property acquisitions, the staff of Radius Management Services, which owned Radius HealthCare, is also now part of Athena, and its Southborough headquarters will serve as Athena’s corporate offices for Massachusetts.
In an email, Shermer said Santilli was personally involved in the choice to acquire Radius.
“Upon touring each facility, he felt strongly that the mission of Athena and Radius were closely aligned in that both are committed to treating each resident with dignity and respect while offering quality, personalized healthcare services,” she wrote.
Besides the Massachusetts nursing homes, Athena also manages 17 in Connecticut, three in Rhode Island and two hospice agencies in the Bay State.
