A Chelmsford-based firm has been fined for violations of asbestos regulations which occurred during work on The Hanover Insurance Group’s headquarters on Lincoln Street in Worcester.
Alpine Environmental, Inc. was fined $18,312 for its alleged violations, according to a Monday press release from the Massachusetts Department of Environmental protection.
MassDEP observed asbestos abatement work at the Worcester building had numerous large breaches, including rips in the air filtration unit, allowing air from the area to enter other areas of the building. This is against regulations, which require asbestos work to be completely contained and without leakage.
"Asbestos is a known carcinogen, and by failing to follow required work practices, the company put workers, tenants, and the public at risk,” said Mary Jude Pigsley, director of MassDEP’s Central Regional Office in Worcester, in the press release.
The work occurred at 440 Lincoln St. in Worcester, which is the 460,000-square-foot headquarters of The Hanover Insurance Group, Inc. It was not stated when the violations occurred.
