Consumer prices up

The seasonally adjusted Consumer Price Index rose 0.3 percent in December, following a 0.8 percent rise in November, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The index for energy advanced 0.9 percent and accounted for about one-third of the overall CPI increase in December. The cost of transportation and medical care also rose in the month, 0.5 percent and 0.3 percent respectively, the BLS reported.

For all of 2007, the Consumer Price Index rose a total of 4.1 percent.

The Consumer Price Index is a monthly calculation of the prices paid by consumers for a “representative basket of goods and services,” according to the BLS Web site.
