After lying vacant two decades, construction is expected to start this summer on a $45-million mixed-use project at the abandoned Edgemere Drive-In on Route 20 in Shrewsbury.
Last week, the Shrewsbury Planning Board approved Edgemere Crossing at Flint Pond on the 68-acre site. It includes an 80,000-square-foot Market Basket, 43,000 square feet of retail including a pharmacy, a bank with a drive-through, and 250 one- and two- bedroom apartments.
The Route 20 Nominee Trust, an entity of Boston Concessions Group, a Cambridge food service management company, and Kelly Realejo have owned the parcel since 1999.
Planning documents reveal one of the apartment buildings will be built close to Route 20 while the other will fit behind the Market Basket.
The project was assisted by a $3.75-million MassWorks grant to pay for roadway improvements to Route 20, including a new fourth travel lane to a stretch of more than half a mile and creating a new signalized intersection at Route 20 and Lake Street.
Shrewsbury has committed an additional $5.7 million to build a new sewer main and pump station along Route 20, which will extend sewer service from the project site into Worcester.
The Market Basket will be the latest in Greater Worcester for the Tewksbury-based chain. The company has stores in Fitchburg and Leominster and is adding locations in the last few years in Athol, Hudson, Oxford, and Maynard.
