Construction has begun on a 500-unit self-storage facility at the former Gatto's Flower Shop and Greenhouses on James Street in Worcester.
The project is slated for completion by next spring, with the storage site to be joined by 6,000 square feet in an adjacent building. The storage facility will be operated by Lucky Pick Self Storage and is the first such development undertaken by Webster-based Galaxy Development, which is seeking new similar sites in Massachusetts.
The James Street site is one of a rising number of self-storage sites in the city, along with those permitted in the past few years on Route 20 and Shrewsbury Street.
City officials have proposed limiting the number of such facilities in the future by zoning amendments to make special permits mandatory for the developments, and require the Zoning Board of Appeals to consider additional factors when considering whether to approve a storage facility, including market demand, site conditions, accessibility and whether historic or architecturally significant buildings would be affected.
