Consigli Construction Co. of Milford has been hired for the first major renovations in the four-decade history of the National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C.
The six-year contract for $650 million was issued to a three-firm team including Consigli, Clark Construction Group LLC of Bethesda, Md., and Smoot Construction Co. of Washington, D.C.
The team will work with the Smithsonian-affiliated museum to remove and replace the exterior stone facade, glass curtain wall and skylights, and add a new entrance canopy designed to evoke the shape of wings. The team will update the museum's infrastructure and perform other building improvements.
The National Air and Space Museum work will be the latest in Washington, D.C., for Consigli, which has an office in the city. Consigli has worked on the Smithsonian Institution’s National Zoological Park new police station, and renovations to the U.S. Botanic Garden and the Smithsonian's Renwick Gallery.
Galleries at the museum are slated to close in phases beginning next month, with the first new galleries opening again in 2022. Artifacts will be moved to the museum's center in suburban Virginia during construction.
