Conn. lawyer sentenced to 12 years for fatally stabbing neighbor

A lawyer who fatally stabbed a neighbor he thought had molested his 2-year-old daughter was sentenced Friday to 12 years in prison for first-degree manslaughter.

Jonathon Edington, 29, of Fairfield was originally charged with murder after his wife told him that Barry James molested their daughter, triggering the attack in the bedroom of James' home on Aug. 28, 2006.

"It's a Shakespearean tragedy brought into the real world," Judge Richard Comerford said. "Something was set into motion in this man's mind -- real or perceived. It was very real to him."

Officers said they caught Edington as he was washing off the victim's blood in his kitchen sink.

Fairfield police have said they found no evidence that James had molested the Edingtons' daughter. They also said Christina Edington has refused to cooperate with the investigation into the slaying.

Christina Edington collapsed, crying, as the sentence was read Friday. Comerford ordered an additional eight years of Edington's sentence suspended, as well as five years probation and counseling.

Prosecutor Jonathan Benedict called the molestation claim "bogus," but said Christina Edington was not charged with a crime because she never gave a sworn statement to police.

A defense psychiatrist determined Edington's wife suffered from postpartum depression, he said.

The sister and parents of Barry James have filed suit against Jonathon Edington.
