Confidence in Mass business edges upward

The Associated Industries of Massachusetts' monthly Business Confidence Index rose 2.6 points in February to 59.2, recouping a January loss, and ending a three-year slide.

According to AIM, employers, especially manufacturers, were "more positive about business conditions within the Commonwealth, including both future conditions and employment trends," said Raymond Torto, co-chairman of AIM's board of economic advisors and principal of CBRE Torto Wheaton.

The strongest index in the overall survey was the employment index, which rose 3.8 points to 57. That's an indication that fewer employers reported or predicted reductions in their workforce, according to AIM.

The sales index weakened in January, but regained 2.4 points in February, and the company index rose 1.8 points.

AIM has been publishing the monthly Business Confidence Index since 1991. The index is based on a survey of member companies across Massachusetts.
